Sofia Art Fair 2025

2 - 5 October 2025
Overview

We are delighted to participate in the Sofia Art Fair 2025, the biggest contemporary art event in Bulgaria, with a selection of work by Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz and Klaas Kloosterboer. Likewise, we are delighted to share our booth with Dürst Britt & Mayhew

Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz' series Abstract Drag engages with questions of temporality and archives, wondering about and excavating unrepresented or illegible moments of utopia in history. In lieu of the objects typically used in drag performance to engage with the constitution of the self as an assemblage of societal markers, Boudry/Lorenz argue that “drag is a way to understand how this constitution occurs, and to reconstruct it on one’s own body”. Interested in the disruption of any interpretation within the gender binary, the work operates beyond coherency between text and image and with partial legibility. The work is therefore queer not only in its subject or addressal, but also in its form.

Their Wig pieces are part of their sculptures and object-based work, which often evoke the potential of performance, using materials that refer to props, stages, costumes, microphones, or dance floors. At first glance, they are akin to postmodernist sculpture, yet their materiality breaks the formal spell of a perceived sculpture and opens up its meaning and function, foreground queer potentiality.

Klaas Kloosterboer's wide-ranging work consistently bridges the gap between abstraction and action. He explores the possibilities of painting, stretches them, and questions their meaning—not of expressive power in a figurative or abstract sense, not of paint as material, but of painting as an act. In his object-based, installation work, Kloosterboer explores the physicality of the body both in its movement and stillness, either straightforwardly depicting it or lyrically evoking it. Yet again, form does not lead to categorisation: what is seemingly sculptoric is very much pictoric, and viceversa. This playful tension is the beating heart of his practice.
