Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz, Toxic, 2012, Installation with Super 16mm film / HD,13 min
Ellen de Bruijne Projects proudly presents the video installation Toxic by Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz at arteBA 2016.
The film Toxic shows two protagonists in an undated time, a punk figure in glitter (Ginger Brooks Takahashi) and a drag queen (Werner Hirsch), both of unclear gender and origin. While the punk gives a speech on toxicity and does a performance referencing early feminist art works, the drag queen re-enacts an interview of Jean Genet from the ‘80s and blames the filmmakers for exposing her to the police-like scenario of being filmed. Ultimately turning the lens on itself, as Toxic interrogates the filmic apparatus as a medium of toxic substances and effects.
Conceived for both the Paris Triennale 2012 and the South London Gallery, 2012, the film installation is accompanied by local archival research that charts moments of representational ambiguity in the early history of police photography.
The work of Boudry & Lorenz revisits documents from the past, photographs, and films. They are researching the history of erased or illegible “queer” moments. Through their films and installations, the artists appropriate historical images to allow a displacement or a skewing of authority, and the means that lead to such knowledge.
Pauline Boudry (Lausanne, Swiss, 1972) and Renate Lorenz (Bonn, Germany, 1963) are based in Berlin, where they have been working together since 2007.
